This semester, The Words is delighted to introduce our readers to our two newest student workers, Marley Craine ’25 and Lydia Schmelzer ’23. We’re excited to give you the inside scoop on how cool they both are!

Marley Craine ’25 is an intended English major on the Creative Writing track, joining us as an Office Assistant. Of her arrival to the team, she said, “I was drawn to the English department because it seemed like a kind, cozy, welcoming environment. I’m excited about majoring in English and I wanted to get to know the department more!” She also mentioned Introduction to Poetry as her favorite class so far, and looks forward to writing fiction and making memories in Old Main. Outside of class, Marley told The Words that she enjoys “reading and writing (of course!), baking, hiking, and jogging. I am also in Macalester’s sketch comedy group, Bad Comedy!” Asked for book recommendations, she named These Precious Days by Ann Patchett and Conversations With Friends by Sally Rooney.

Lydia Schmelzer ’23 is an English Literature major with a sociology minor, and will also be joining the team as an Office Assistant. While initially undecided, after lots of great classes and professors, including Zadie Smith and Ali Smith with Professor Elkins, as well as plenty of Old Main Floor 2 homework sessions, Lydia declared her English major. Though she’s on the literature track, she’s looking forward to Creative Nonfiction with Professor Franson this semester. Asked about her favorite books, she recommends Slow Days, Fast Company by Eve Babitz and How Should A Person Be? by Sheila Heti. And much like the author of this article, she’s lactose intolerant!

In other news, we’re also proud of student workers Birdie Keller ’25 and Charley Eatchel ’24, who are both ramping up their roles in the department by becoming social media apprentices this semester! Additionally, resident icon Patrick Coy-Bjork ’23 is taking on the role of Communications Liaison, and Chloë Moore ’24 will be learning about the role of senior newsletter editor here at The Words. We’re so excited to have such a great team as we kick off Spring 2022!
