By Chloe Moore ’24 and Patrick Coy-Bjork ’24

Dear Words Readers,

Welcome back and happy spring, even if it doesn’t feel like it! We’re your Senior Newsletter Editors: Chloë Moore ’24 (she/they) and Patrick Coy-Bjork ’24 (he/they). I (Chloë) was a Senior Editor last semester, and Patrick is moving up to join me for the spring! Last semester, they were an associate editor, and are joining me at this lofty echelon now that our former co-Senior Editor Zoë is off on grand adventures in Germany! We of course miss her terribly, but know she is having a blast in Europe! In terms of other changes, we are delighted to welcome Sydney Ellison ’24 and Lydia Schmelzer ’23 to the Associate Editor team! You can read about them in their own words (hehe) later in this issue.

As we look towards this semester, we continue to be excited about bringing you the best of English department news. We’ll be highlighting cool events, neat classes, and the wonderful cast of characters– students, faculty, staff, and alumns– that bring life to the haunted and hallowed halls of Old Main. To that end: if you do anything cool (go to an event! have something published! read a really awesome book! see an awesome Mac production!) please let us know! We would love nothing more than to sing your praises to our wonderful readers. Feel free to email either [email protected], or the editors directly: [email protected] and [email protected]

Speaking of the editors, who are we, exactly? For starters, we are both English majors (of course); Chloë is a Spanish minor and Patrick is also part of the Psychology and Theater departments. We are both long-time English Department student workers; we started as humble office assistants, became the first leaders of our semi-viral social media empire, and now come to you as the leaders of Macalester’s most prestigious publication (please do not fact-check that statement). Some other fun tidbits: we’re actually roommates! We live together on campus in the Palace of Air-Conditioned Dreams (GDD) where we enjoy playing our matching guitars, listening to vinyls (Patrick likes musical theater, Chloë enjoys classic rock), and generally being sooooo cool and fun to hang out with. Our biggest shared bond, however, is our deep love for all things Old Main 2 and our undying devotion to Jan Beebe.

Hopefully we’ve gotten you hooked for another semester of the Words and haven’t talked too much about ourselves. We are so excited to see what everyone in our community accomplishes this semester, and to continue bringing you exciting stories from our wonderful student team as the weeks go on. Remember to catch us on the first Thursday of every month going forward, delivered at 8:30 am sharp to your inbox!

With love,

Chloë and Patrick
