Alison R. Sommer
Academic Information Associate - Languages & Fine Arts

I am the Academic Information Associate (AIA) for the languages and fine arts at Macalester College. As an AIA I am a member of Information Technology Services (ITS). I support the faculty in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts complex (humanities, art, music, and theater/dace) and help them use technology to aid their teaching. For example, I may help them set up course materials in Moodle, Macalester's learning management system, or I may work with them to find the right software for a particular assignment or learning goal. My goal as an AIA is to enhance the learning experience for Macalester students through the use of technical resources while still applying sound learning pedagogies.

I am also the director of the Digital Resource Center. The Digital Resource Center is a computer lab and work space that caters specifically to the languages and fine arts. In the center we have special software for languages, as well as music composition, video editing, and visual arts. As the Digital Resource Center director I also supervise the 15-20 student workers who work at the front desk. I train these students to answer user questions and troubleshoot problems in the lab and nearby classrooms.

I have been working at Macalester since August, 2007, and I really love my job here. The faculty, staff, and students at Macalester are a joy to work with, and I feel privileged to have the chance to work with them every day.
