From the full ALFALFA catalog (Haynes et al. 2018), the SHIELD sample is selected according to four criteria. First, the ALFALFA HI detection must be co-spatial with an optical counterpart in SDSS images. Second, the best distance estimates for each candidate are used to select those sources within 15 Mpc (a compromise between volume and angular resolution for follow-up work). Third, sources meeting the above criteria are filtered to only include those with log(MHI) < 7.2. Finally, sources with HI line widths of W50 > 50 km/s are removed (selecting against massive, gas-poor low surface brightness galaxies).

The full SHIELD sample contains 82 galaxies. VLA Large Program 20A-330 (P.I. Cannon) is acquiring multi-configuration VLA imaging of these sources.
