National Meetings

Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)
The SACNAS National Conference provides a forum for students, faculty and professionals in science and education to share research, address the unique accomplishments and challenges of minorities in science, form networks of mentors and colleagues, and gain access to educational and career opportunities. The 2009 conference was held in Dallas, TX.

The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) is a national conference designed to encourage students to pursue advanced training in the biomedical sciences or behavioral sciences, including mathematics and provide faculty mentors and advisors with resources for facilitating student success. The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) is sponsored by The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), Division of Minority Opportunities in Research Program (MORE) and managed by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). This year's meeting was held in Phoenix, AZ in early November.

A number of DISC students have attended SACNAS or ABRCMS national meetings in the past. These students include Luisa Paredes, Daniel Ressler, Charles Vang, Theo Kim, Pros Seng, Evelyn Balsells, Jaye Gardiner and Judi-Ann Crooks.

Student National Medical Association (SNMA)
The SNMA is the nation's oldest and largest independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. It was established in 1964 by medical students from Howard University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College. SNMA is dedicated both to ensuring culturally sensitive medical education and services, as well as increasing the number of African-American, Latino and other students of color entering and completing medical school. The national meeting will be in Chicago in April 2010.
