There's a lot to think about when it comes to food--how it's grown, where it comes from and now what the purchase of it means for the producer. Professor Mary Montgomery plays a role in Nobel Prize. Two U.S. academics have won the Nobel Prize in physiology/medicine for discovering a way that cells control the flow of genetic information, an important research tool that scientists hope will lead to new treatments for a range of illnesses from infections to cancer. Montgomery is a co-author on the Nature article first describing RNA interference effects in C. elegans.

Macalester College Opens its New Athletic and Wellness Complex
The 175,000 Square-Foot Leonard Center will Serve Entire Campus - Oct. 2, 2008 - Macalester College's most ambitious effort to promote athletics, health and wellness on campus has been realized in its new athletic and wellness complex, the Leonard Center. The Leonard Center dedication is 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, in front of the Leonard Center, 125 Snelling Avenue, St. Paul, Minn., Shaw Field side (facing the campus). The date stone and time capsule will also be installed. more»

Macalester Professor Named American Council on Education Fellow The American Council on Education (ACE) has selected 39 college and university senior faculty and administrators for the 2007-08 ACE Fellows Program, including Macalester Professor Sonita Sarker, of the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department and the English Department.  Three fellows are sponsored by the F. Marian Bishop Charitable Trust Leadership Program and one partially supported by Lumina Foundation for Education. more»

 

Macalester Professor Named President of MAA David M. Bressoud, DeWitt Wallace Professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, has been elected president of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). He will become president-elect next year and assume his post as president in 2009 for a two-year term. more»

Eight Honored at Annual Awards Convo - The following notable alumni and faculty were recognized at the 2008 Alumni Awards Convocation, held in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, Concert Hall during Alumni Weekend, June 6-8, 2008: Alumni Distinguished Citizens - Roya Mohagheghi Ansari '83, Karlyn Kohrs Campbell '58, Katherine Maehr '89, Charlotte Anderson Tripet '53, Joan Swanson Velasquez '63; Young Alumni Award - Lorne Lieb '98; Catharine Lealtad Service to Society Award - J. Michael González-Campoy '83; Alumni Service Award - David Lanegran '63.

Adam-Maliq Muro Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program - Adam-Maliq Muro '10 was recently honored during an event at Goldman Sachs in New York on April 11 that convened all of this year's 20 US/Canada Global Leaders for leadership development workshops and presentations by Ivan Seidenberg (Chairman and CEO of Verizon Communications) and Timothy Shriver (Chairman of Special Olympics).

The Goldman Sachs Foundation and the Institute of International Education (IIE) recently announced that 20 second-year students from leading United States and Canadian colleges have been named as 2008 Goldman Sachs Global Leaders, the third class of students in the United States and Canada to be so honored.

Since 2001, the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program (GSGLP), developed by The Goldman Sachs Foundation and IIE, has been a pioneer in identifying and developing some of the world's most promising future leaders. Students are selected through a rigorous competition on the bases of academic excellence and leadership potential.

Fulbright Teaching Assistantships - Christine Park '08 will graduate this May with a Psychology major. She received a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in South Korea starting this coming fall. Here is her abstract: "As an English teaching assistant I hope to improve my students' language abilities and depth of knowledge of the United States. I plan on doing this by providing the students with entertaining, thought provoking and stimulating activities while remaining flexible and understanding. Likewise, I want to develop my language abilities in Korean and immerse myself in Korean culture to my utmost capability."
