Susan Green's research interests are in the areas of spectroscopy and chemical education. She trained as a physical chemist studying the vibrational and electronic structure of small metal oxides as well as trying her hand at analytical chemistry. More recently she coauthored the textbook Introduction to Molecular Thermodynamics, currently in use in the first-year curriculum at Macalester and elsewhere.
