Student Employment

The Physics and Astronomy department offers a number of student employment jobs including tutors, graders, and lab assistants. A job description for each position is provided here, as well as on the Student Employment website, where you will also find current listings for any available student jobs in the department.

Physics Tutor - Level 2

Job Description
Physics Tutor - Level 2 duties and responsibilities include:

  1. Tutor students in physics coursework during scheduled shifts in the Physics Tutoring Room (OLRI 159).
  2. Monitor and track student use of your tutoring services, and the use of computers and equipment in the introductory laboratories.
  3. Arrive on time for assigned tutoring shift and unlock the doors to introductory labs.
  4. Remain in the tutoring room for your entire shift, except those times when you are monitoring or assisting students in the adjoining intro labs.
  5. Ensure that the tutoring and intro lab rooms are locked up at the end of your shift.
  6. Communicate with your supervisor regularly, particularly to report problems encountered by a wide range of students using the tutoring services.
  7. Perform additional miscellaneous departmental duties (such as Grading homework problems for Physics courses -- see Physics Grader job description) as assigned.

Job Requirements
Please do not apply for this position if you do not meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Applicants must have completed (at a minimum) both PHYS 226 and PHYS 227 with a grade of “B” or better. Special consideration will be given to those having completed PHYS 331 or higher coursework.
  2. Must be very comfortable with the subject matter of the courses listed above.
  3. Must be able to work Sunday through Thursday evenings. Shifts typically run from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m.
  4. Must be reliable, punctual, and trustworthy.
  5. Verbal communication (or “People”) skills” and additional coursework in physics and mathematics are a plus.

  1. Plan, schedule, advertise and present weekly Public Nights at the Observatory.
  2. Supervise and assist students with observatory class activities and projects on observing nights related to PHYS 440 (spring) or PHYS 120 (fall).
  3. Provide special observing sessions or tours for small groups as requested.
  4. Assist the Observatory Manager and Professor Cannon with routine maintenance and upkeep of the observatory, including equipment inventory or other special projects as requested.

  6. Potential to expand current public outreach programs—possibly off-site or off-campus.
