Internships/Volunteer Opportunities:
WGSS-related volunteer opportunities
Students in "WGSS 205: Local/Global Sexual Politics" volunteer in local organizations and write public scholarship based on their study of organizing in the field. In fall 2003 students participated in: the Minnesota AIDS Project Women and Families Systems Advocacy, Housing Systems Advocacy, and Public Policy programs, the OutFront Minnesota Anti-Violence and Public Policy Programs, the Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights Refugee and Immigrant Program, and the organizations Casa de Esperanza, District 202, Hmong American Partnership, and Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota.
Megan Elliot was an unpaid, "communications" intern with MN Naral during the summer of 2001. MN Naral lobbies and works with elected officials to make sure anti-choice legislation doesn't get passed. As a "communications" intern, Megan wrote fact sheets, letters to the editor of newspapers, updated press lists, worked on a newsletter, and compiled a legislative scoreboard on voting on choice-related issues. Megan says the staff is "small, friendly and dedicated" and that it's a good place to "learn about reproductive health issues and pro-choice issues in MN." There may be paid internships available. www.mnnaral.org
In the past, Delaney Keyes volunteered in the child-care program with the Jeremiah Program. The Jeremiah Program is a housing program for young, single mothers that provides childcare and night classes, as well as requiring that moms attend school and hold a job. In the Fall, Delaney will be working with the Child Services Director to bridge the Women's and Children's Services Programs. Delaney says the program "has a very holistic approach to improving women's lives for and their children's future." Lots of intern/volunteer positions available. www.jeremiahprogram.org
