What are the 2007-2008 meal options?
Each resident is charged the same flat fee for a meal plan, $3886.
The meal plans are:
Plan A - 19 meals/week
Plan B - 14 meals/week with $125.00 flex dollars for the semester
Plan C - 10 meals/week with $200.00 flex dollars for the semester
Plan D - $1200 All-Flex points for the sememster
Flex can be used at the Cafe Mac Grille to purchase a latte on the way to class, food to go, or some late night snack food during those long study sessions! Unused flex dollars do not roll over from fall to spring semester.
Students may change their meal plan during the first two-weeks of classes each semester by completing a short form in the Department of Residential Life Office. (NOTE: All first-year students are assigned the 19-meal plan for their first semester and do not have the option of changing this option.)
How does the Macalester phone system work?
Each residence hall room on campus is equipped with a private phone line and voice mailbox for each person residing in that room. The phone is the property of Macalester College. The room phones are part of the campus phone system. This allows access to other residence hall rooms and departments by dialing the 4-digit extension number. To make a local off-campus call, dial 9 before the seven or ten digit number. Third party calls (i.e. operator assisted) may not be placed, nor collect calls received from any student extension. Long distance services are not available through the College. We recommend purchasing calling cards. Questions or problems with your phone, local service or voice mail should be directed to Telecommunications at x6566.
How Do I Receive Mail?
Each student is assigned a SPO (student post office) mailbox. This is affectionately referred to as SPO. You will receive your SPO number during Orientation in the fall. The Post Office is located on the lower level of the Campus Center . The front window is open Monday-Friday from 8 am-4 pm - you can get stamps, mail letters packages, and pick-up packages here!
How Much is Laundry?
Most washers and dryers on-campus are operated by your College I.D., except in the Grand Cambridge Apartments and the Veggie Co-op (in these locations the machines require coins). Money can be placed on your card at the Cashier's Office (located in 77 Mac) or at the Campus Center. NOTE: This money is separate from the meal plan. Washers are $1.00 and Dryers are $.75 for approximately 45 minutes of drying time.
How Do I Rent a Refrigerator?
Refrigerators can be rented by the semester or the year from Collegiate Services, Inc. They may be reached at 763-383-2956 or visit them at www.collegiateservices.com. All students will receive information in the Summer Room Assignment mailing in early August.
Can I move-in to the residence hall early?
Students are not permitted to move-in to the residence halls early unless otherwise authorized to do so by the Associate Director of Residential Life. This is to ensure the safety of all students and that all rooms and halls are prepared for students' arrival.
Are the residence halls open during 2007-2008 breaks?
Residence halls remain open during Fall Break (October 25-28), Thanksgiving Break (November 22-25), and Spring Break (March 15-23). All halls close following finals of fall semester for approximately two weeks. Students are allowed to live on campus during January break; however, they must have received permission from the Dean of Academic Programs or the Dean of Students. Only students who are international, have registered for academic credit during January, are working an internship, are working for an approved office on-campus, or participating in athletics are allowed to stay on campus during January. Information to request housing is sent out in late fall. Halls re-open at 9am on Saturday, January 26, 2008.
