When will I receive my residence hall assignment?
Residence hall assignments are mailed at the beginning of August. You will receive your roommate(s) name and home address. We encourage roommates to contact each other, if possible, prior to arriving on campus. This helps to organize who is bringing what to campus and to aid in the transition of living with one another.
When I received my room assignment why didn't I get my roommate's telephone number?
Students have the option to request that their phone number be unlisted on campus. So, to avoid any violation of privacy, we decided not to include phone numbers in your housing information. We suggest that you first write a letter to your roommate and give them your phone number, (remember snail mail?). You can also try directory assistance either over the phone or on the internet using your roommate's last name and address. If you are, or your roommate is, an international student, we are willing to provide e-mail addresses if you are worried that a letter won't reach them in time.
How do I request a roommate?
Incoming students may request the name of a roommate on their room and board application (NOTE: both students must request each other as roommates).
How are first-year students assigned?
Incoming first-year students are paired based on the following criteria: (1) whether or not they have chosen a residential first-year course and (2) according to their room and board application listing their living preferences.
Residential Life makes every attempt to assign students based on their preferences. Residential Life cannot accommodate all requests but does try very hard to match students according to their needs.
What items should I bring to campus?
Please go to our list of suggested items. These are only possible suggestions of things to bring to campus. We encourage roommates to speak to one another prior to moving in to help eliminate doubling up of large items.
What size are the mattresses?
All beds are twin sized, extra long (the dimensions are 36" x 80"). We recommend purchasing extra-long twin sheets. The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is sponsoring a Linens Program. Check out www.rhl.org/mac for extra-long twin sheets, comforters and other items for your room. The great thing about this program is you can order all your items and they are shipped directly to your home - then just load them in the car and bring them to Mac! If you are an international student, your items are shipped directly to school and will be available to you when you check-in for New International Student Orientation.
Can I ship boxes to campus prior to moving in?
Yes you can! If you need to ship trunks, suitcases or boxes, the College will hold them for you in Trunk Storage. Specific Trunk Storage hours will be posted when you arrive. Please be aware that trunk storage hours are limited. You must pick up all items shipped to trunk storage by September 14th. Please address your luggage and boxes in this manner:
Your Name
Macalester College
ATTN: Trunk Storage
1600 Grand Avenue
St. Paul, MN 55105
Boxes should not be shipped prior to August 10th.
