H1N1 Vaccine NOT Yet Available!
Parents and students - please note that the Health & Wellness Center (HWC) has not received any H1N1 vaccine and does not anticipate receiving any vaccine until later in November. (Update 11/17/09: According to MN Dept of Health, it may be mid-late December before we receive vaccine). We will receive vaccine only when it is released by the MN Department of Health. Should/when we receive it, we will HEAVILY ADVERTISE its availability and make sure that every student is aware of vaccination opportunities. The MN Department of Health will initially be releasing only enough vaccine for students 18 & under with pre-existing health concerns; more vaccine will be received later for older students with pre-existing health concerns and then for all other students ages 24 and under.
Note that
the HWC is very busy assisting students who come to the center and we would greatly appreciate it if you would check the page noted below for any updates instead of calling. In the meantime, students are strongly encouraged to get a seasonal influenza vaccination which is still available by appointment in the HWC (x6275).
Visit H1N1 web site »
Macalester College has created a web site addressing the concerns and procedures related to H1N1 influenza. Students, faculty and staff will all receive an email describing how to prevent the virus and what to do if you become ill.
We encourage all community members to engage in good health habits to reduce the spread of this virus. This includes washing your hands regularly, using waterless hand sanitizer (e.g. Purell), getting plenty of sleep, healthy eating and exercise. Regularly wipe down with disinfectant wipes items such as your phone, desk, computer keyboard and mouse and doorknobs.
Student who become ill with influenza-like illness are asked to self-isolate (stay home in your res hall room or apartment) and must contact the Health & Wellness Center (x6275) or Office of Student Affairs (x6220). Faculty and staff are asked to not come to work and to report to their office that they are ill. Community members should not return to class or work until their fever has been gone for 24 hours (without the aid of fever-reducing medication). Information and links to resources for self-care may be found on the page about Treatment.
The majority of people who become ill with the virus will not need medical attention. However, if you have a pre-existing condition/chronic health concern, you should contact your health care provider - students, this should be the Health & Wellness Center. Similarly, if your symptoms worsen (sustained high fever, difficulty breathing, dehydration, etc.), contact a health care provider. All Macalester community members are asked to stay abreast of current communications around this concern through the Daily Piper and Macalester email.
Note for students: If you have through Macalester, you are eligible to call their at 1-800-556-1555. It is staffed by registered nurses who will be able to provide information and recommend general options. This is a national center - they will not be familiar with local resources.
