Electronic Cigarettes: A New Challenge for Tobacco Prevention
Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, have quickly become a hot topic in the world of tobacco prevention. Join Emily Anderson (Class of 2003) from the Association for Nonsmokers-MN (ANSR) to hear an overview of these new products, including what they are, how they are manufactured and marketed, and who is using them.  Emily will also provide a summary of proposed FDA regulations, recent state legislation, and the local policy landscape around electronic cigarettes, including what college campuses are doing to regulate the use of e-cigarettes.  

The workshop will be in the Weyerhaeuser Boardroom.  Lunch will be provided and be available beginning at 11:45 am.  Please register here. 

Late Fall PHYSICAL activity Classes: -  to sign up ONLINE

Sign-up and registration begins October 27, 9 am, through an online process.  Classes begin the week of November 3, 2014.  Each class must have a minimum of 10 participants for the class to take place.

The 6-week series of classes have a registration fee of $20 for students and $25 for faculty and staff. If that class meets more often, the registration fee may be higher and is noted by the class description.

Boot Camp - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:05 - 12:55 pm, November 4 - December 11, 2014.  Note this is a 11 session class with no class meeting on November 27.
A fun, high energy class with ever changing routines aimed at incorporating cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, and core strength.  This is an advanced class that involves low impact jumping, running, and interval training.  Because this class meets twice per week, the fee is $40 for faculty/staff.

Circuit Training - Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:05 - 12:55 pm, November 3 - December 10, 2014
Resistance training that provides a total body strength workout and elevates the heart rate.  Because this class meets twice per week, the fee is $40 for faculty and staff.

Mindfulness - Thursdays, 12:05 - 12:55 pm, November 6 - December 11, 2014. Note this is a 5 week class with no class meeting on November 27.
Come and learn how mindfulness can help us weather the storms of our lives with more calm, acceptance and compassion.  This class is open to everyone, whether you are new to mindfulness or you would like to revitalize or deepen your meditation practice. Participants will learn ways to integrate mindfulness into their daily lives, including silent and guided meditations, compassion practices, and breath awareness.  This class is for faculty and staff only.  Class meets in Leonard Center classroom (room 36).

Pilates - Tuesdays, 12:05 - 12:55 pm, November 4 - December 9, 2014.
Strengthen and lengthen with Pilates. This mat class will help you develop abdominal strength and control, while creating a connection between your core and the rest of your body. The exercises emphasize proper breathing, precise alignment, and efficient sequencing of movement. Mats are available or feel free to bring your own.   All levels welcome.  Class meets in Studio 1.

Pilates - Thursdays, 12:05 - 12:55 pm, November 6 - December 11, 2014.  Note this is a 5 week class with no class meeting on November 27.
Strengthen and lengthen with Pilates. This mat class will help you develop abdominal strength and control, while creating a connection between your core and the rest of your body. The exercises emphasize proper breathing, precise alignment, and efficient sequencing of movement. Mats are available or feel free to bring your own.   This class will move at a slightly faster pace than the Tuesday pilates class.  Class meets in Studio 1.

Yoga - Wednesdays, 12:05 - 12:55 pm, November 5 - December 10, 2014.
Learn yoga basics in this beginner-friendly hatha yoga class.  Explore alignment principles of specific poses (asanas) and experience more flowing movement sequences (vinyasa).  Increase strength, flexibility, and body awareness, and leave feeling more calm and refreshed.  Mats are available or feel free to bring your own.  Class meets in Studio 1.

Join a CorePower trained yoga teacher for a power Vinyasa flow.  This invigorating class connects breath and movement through a dynamic and intelligently designed series of postures, emphasizing body awareness and mindfulness.  Set to music, this practice will leave you energized and refreshed.  Mats are available or feel free to bring your own. Class meets in Studio 1.

Liability Waiver

Summer Faculty and Staff chair massage

WHAM and Employment Services are offering a pilot project this summer, 25 minute chair massage for $30.  Appointments are available for faculty and staff by Massage Therapist, Scott Miller, in the Leonard Center Wellness Lounge.

Appointment Dates and Times:  June 10, July 8, and August 12 - every thirty minutes, with the first appointment at 11:00 am and last appointment at 1:30 pm.

Details:

  • Limited to one per faculty/staff for the summer.  No students or plus ones allowed for this pilot program.
  • This is only available through online registration with credit card payment.
  • No refunds will be offered if cancellation is made less than 10 days prior to massage date.  If cancelling massage, send refund requests by email to health@macalester.edu
