Spring Session 1 Classes

We are excited to offer a new evening Yoga class on Thursdays, a Mindfulness retreat for couples/pairs, and a fun dance-cardio class on Fridays.

Registration is open as of Monday, January 13 and will close on Wednesday, January 29.  If classes do not have the mandatory minimum enrollment (10 or more people) by the registration deadline, the class may be cancelled.  You will be notified and refunded if we cancel the class.  Please note:  Refund requests are only available up to the first day of class, with no exceptions.

Classes begin the week of February 3, 2020.

Strength Training

Circuit Training – Monday & Wednesday, 12:05 – 12:50 pm, Fitness Center, February 3 – March 11, 2020
Resistance training that provides total body strength, endurance, core strength, and cardiovascular fitness.  Participants are able to work at their own pace and push themselves based on their goals and fitness level. This class meets twice per week for 6 weeks.

  • $80 Semester Circuit Training pass (12 weeks – Spring Session 1 & 2)
  • $40 Flex pass (2 classes per week of either Circuit Training or Boot Camp)
  • $40 Standard Circuit Training pass

Boot Camp – Tuesday & Thursday, 12:05 – 12:50 pm, Fitness Center, February 4 – March 12, 2020
A fun, high-energy class with ever-changing routines aimed at incorporating cardiovascular fitness along with total body muscular endurance and strength. This is an advanced class that involves low impact jumping, running, and interval training. Workouts and exercise can be modified for different fitness levels. This class meets twice per week for 6 weeks.

Cardio

Dance Cardio – Fridays, 1:05 – 1:50 pm, Studio 1, Leonard Center, February 7 to March 13. Cost $25.  Improve your endurance, strength, coordination and flexibility in this fun, calorie-burning, dance workout! After a full body warm up, you’ll be led through easy-to-follow moves set to today’s hottest pop, hip-hop and dance music, as well as your favorite throwbacks! This class is great for all fitness levels and no dance experience is required. Please wear indoor sneakers or dance shoes, bring a water bottle, and get ready to sweat!                                                                                                                          Instructor: Ariel Linnerson

Mindfulness

Mindfulness – Thursdays, 12:05 – 12:50 pm, Club Sports Room, Leonard Center, February 6 to March 12, 2020. The cost is $25.
In this session we will explore how mindfulness practice helps us develop compassion for ourselves and others in our everyday lives, through the simple and straightforward practice of RAIN (from Tara Brach’s new book Radical Compassion.)   Each session offers time for mindful meditation as well as learning how this practice helps us uncover our own innate ability for care, understanding and presence.  Everyone is welcome, those new to, as well as those who are experienced in mindfulness practice.            Instructor: Jane Rauenhorst

Mindfulness Retreat – Giving Your Relationship the Gift of Mindfulness – Saturday, February 29, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm in the 4th Floor Lounge of Old Main at Macalester College; $40 per couple/pair          Invite someone you care about, your partner or spouse, a good friend, roommate, sibling, parent or adult child to come along with you to experience how mindfulness practices (that are simple and doable) can enrich your relationship.  In a variety of fun and supportive ways, participants will explore (with the person they come to the retreat with) how mindfulness can cultivate a sense of connection and appreciation for each other and your unique relationship, and how mindfulness can help you bring a kind, nonjudgmental approach to your relationship.

All Macalester staff and faculty are invited, along with someone you care about.   The retreat is an incentive-eligible well-being activity for employees and spouses/domestic partners on Macalester’s health plan.  There is no need for any prior experience or knowledge of mindfulness to enjoy and benefit from this retreat.  Space is limited to the first 12 partners/pairs.                                                                    Instructor: Jane Rauenhorst

Learn yoga basics in this beginner-friendly hatha yoga class.  Explore alignment principles of specific poses (asanas) and experience more flowing movement sequences (vinyasa).  Increase strength, flexibility, and body awareness, and leave feeling more calm and refreshed.

SomaYoga – Thursdays, 4:45 – 5:45 pm, Studio 1, February 6 to March 12, 2020. Cost is $25.         WHAM is excited to offer an evening Yoga class.  Learn yoga basics in this beginner-friendly class.  SomaYoga is a therapeutic blend of Somatics (neuromuscular re-education to release tension) and yoga postures to increase body awareness, freedom, mobility, and strength while calming the nervous system. Explore this therapeutic approach to yoga that will challenge the seasoned practitioner and will also be accessible for the beginner.  Leave feeling calm and refreshed with practices to use outside of class.          Instructor: Ann Blackburn

Gentle Yoga – Fridays, 12:05 – 12:50 pm, Studio 1, February 7 to March 13, 2020. Cost is $25.
Honor your body with a gentle approach to yoga. In this class you will explore seated, standing, and supine yoga postures at a slower pace to strengthen, stretch, and relieve tension. Extra time and attention in poses will allow you to tune into your mind, body, and breath. Gentle yoga is for all ability levels and is a great option for anyone looking to slow down their practice.
