Gear up for Summer with Macalester’s Mini ZAP Challenge
As part of the Twin Cities Bike to Work Day, Macalester is hosting our own Bike/Walk to Work Day on Wednesday, May 17. Participants are invited to join us at French Meadow Bakery and Cafe on Grand Avenue for free coffee, high-fives and prizes from 8am to 10am.
We’ve taken the fun another step by creating a Mini ZAP Challenge for the week of May 15-19. Whether you commute to work on two wheels or two feet, or you simply need another reason to get outside on your lunch break, join your colleagues in this week-long challenge for a chance to win even more great prizes.
This event is sponsored by WHAM, the Sustainability Office and the High Winds Fund.
Eligibility & Registration
The Mini ZAP Challenge is open to all staff and faculty with a ZAP Twin Cities account and a ZAP biking or walking tag. If you do not have an account or tag, visit our ZAP Program (scroll further on this page) for more information.
To participate in the challenge and enter into the Macalester drawings, there are no additional registration steps needed. However, we encourage you to complete the Twin Cities Bike to Work Day Pledge Form to be entered for a chance to win some other great prizes.
ONGOING PROGRAM – Get ZAPPED. Get Entered to Win.
Macalester will hold two drawings after the challenge week and the lucky winners may choose a $50 credit towards a massage at Awaken for Wellness or a $50 credit to Now Bikes. Participants will receive an entry in the drawings by getting ZAPPED:
- At least once during the challenge week
- All five days during the challenge week
Additionally, anyone who ZAPs on Friday May, 19 (Twin Cities Bike to Work Day) will be entered in a drawing to win a one-night stay at the St. Paul Hotel, sponsored by Smart Trips.
Macalester has installed a ZAP Reader on the corner of Macalester Street and Summit Avenue as a part of the greater ZAP Twin Cities Program. This is a free program to incentivize bicycling and walking as a form of transportation.
Installation of the reader and on-going incentives are sponsored by the Sustainability Office, WHAM, and The High Winds Fund.
GET TAGGED: HOW?
Periodic tagging events are hosted to introduce participants to the program and distribute bicycle tags and wallet cards for walkers. Check the Piper for announcements about upcoming events. We’ll get you tagged, registered and ready to roll!
When tagging events are not being hosted, staff, faculty and students can pick up a ZAP tag at The Highlander book store by showing his or her college ID. Neighbors to Macalester can contact the Mac-Groveland Community Council.
GET ZAPPED: WHERE?
Ride or walk through the ZAP Zone, which is between 5’ and 15’ from the ZAP reader on the corner of Summit Ave and Macalester Street. If you hear a “beep” you have been ZAPPED! It may take up to 15 minutes before your ZAP appears in your online account.
Click here to find a list of all the ZAP reader locations.
GET REWARDED: WHAT?
Staff and Faculty :
Get 4 ZAPs per month to be entered into WHAM’s monthly prize drawings.
Get 8 ZAPs per month to be entered into the ZAP Twin Cities St. Paul prize pool.
All ZAP Twin Cities participants will be rewarded automatically after the first 10 rides. Continue to ZAP your ride or walk and you’ll be eligible for prizes like gift cards to restaurants and stores and great bike accessories.
You only need one ZAP per day to get ride or walk credit for that day. More than one ZAP per day will not add to your mileage, trip totals or entries into drawings.
