What is Supplemental Instruction (SI)?
The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program consists of peer-facilitated study and review sessions. SI sessions are regularly scheduled, informal review hours in which students compare notes, discuss readings and lectures, work through problems, and predict test questions. Sessions are facilitated by SI Leaders, students who have previously done well in the course and who re-attend all class lectures, take notes, and teach “how to learn” with “what to learn” strategies for the course. Attendance is voluntary. SI sessions are offered for selected courses in Chemistry, Biology, and Economics.

FAQ for Students
-
Who Attends the SI Study Sessions? SI sessions are open to all students enrolled in the class and therefore attract students from all ability levels. The program helps “A” students keep their “A” and it helps struggling students pull up their grades.
-
What Happens in SI Sessions? Research indicates that students earn better grades when they work actively with the course material and participate in small groups. Therefore, you should expect the SI sessions to have an informal atmosphere where you and your classmates can ask questions, identify and discuss important concepts, review class notes, discuss reading assignments, work practice problems or take practice quizzes, and improve relevant study skills.
-
What are the SI Leader Qualifications? SI Leaders are undergraduate students who have completed SI Leader training, which focuses on how to encourage active, not passive, learning. Leaders are selected on the basis of their academic strengths as well as their communication and people skills. The leaders attend the class, take notes, and do the readings, just as the enrolled students do.
-
How are the Times for the SI Sessions Selected? During the first week of class, the SI Leader will administer a survey of when students are most likely to attend a SI session. Using that input, the SI Leader will arrange for a weekly two-hour session.
-
Why do SI Leaders Keep a Sign-In Sheet? Attendance is taken solely for statistical purposes. We want to know how many students use the services, how often they attend, etc. Attendance has no bearing on students’ course grades.
