Big Questions 2022 at Macalester

What is the future of internationalism for the U.S., and what does it mean for higher education?

Over the decades, people with star power—Nixon, Disney, Obama—have taken so-called “goodwill tours” to express benevolent interest and strengthen international ties. But lately, the idea of “internationalism” has become murky. The U.S. sells a vision of utopia to the world, yet also seems determined to keep foreigners out. As American attitudes, policies, and international barriers shift with U.S. foreign policy, what does this mean for higher education? How will this impact our ability to recruit and retain the best students from around the world?

Join Dr. Ernesto Capello, professor of history and Latin American studies and Dr. David Wick ‘91, Associate Professor; Program Chair, International Education Management at Middlebury Institute of International Studies in conversation with President Suzanne Rivera.
