Code of Conduct

Macalester is committed to the highest standards of professional conduct and ethics.  Macalester is a member of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and adheres to NASFAA’s Statement of Ethical Principles.

This code of conduct has been developed in compliance with the requirements of the 2008 Higher Education Opportunity Act.  All employees who are in any way responsible for the administration of student educational loans are subject to these guidelines. 

  • Macalester employees do not receive any personal benefits from student lending institutions.  Members of the Financial Aid Office staff may not accept anything of more than nominal value from a student lending institution.  Staff members may not receive gifts or reimbursement for travel, lodging, or meals from a lending institution. 
  • Macalester does not favor or recommend any lending institution in exchange for anything of value.  Macalester will not enter into any revenue-sharing agreements with a student lending institution.  Macalester may utilize lending institution personnel for delivery of relevant entrance or exit counseling information to students.  Macalester may accept training and training materials from a lending institution.  In no case will Macalester offer an advantage to a lending institution in exchange for counseling or training services.
  • Employees who are involved in the administration of student financial aid will not serve on lender advisory boards in exchange for remuneration. 
  • Macalester may provide a list of preferred lenders for private/alternative loans.  If Macalester provides a preferred lender list, the criteria for inclusion will be clearly articulated.  Macalester students are always free to choose any lending institution, regardless of whether the lender is included on a preferred lender list.
  • Macalester will work to efficiently process all student loans, regardless of the student’s choice of lending institution.
