Minnesota Department of Health Injury and Violence Prevention Unit

The Macalester-Howard Hughes Medical Institute Minnesota Department of Health, Injury and Violence Prevention Unit (IVPU) Summer Research Position

The mission of the IVPU is to strengthen Minnesota’s communities in injury and violence prevention. The Unit: 

  • Collects and interprets data on injury and violence
  • Develops and evaluates prevention programs and policies, and
  • Provides tools, technical assistance, and information to others

While working as Mac-HHMI Data Scientists at the IVPU, students will learn about methods of public health surveillance and epidemiologic investigations and studies, and how principles of computation and data management operate in a public health setting. The students will participate in public health surveillance and studies, performing statistical analysis using quantitative research software and health-related data such as hospital discharge data, mortality data, crash data, and trauma registry data. There may be opportunities for interaction with key stakeholders, including policy makers, along with networking opportunities. Students selected for participation will receive a stipend of $4500 for 10 weeks of full time work (40 hrs/week).  Students will conduct research at the Minnesota Department of Health which is located in the Golden Rule Building in downtown St. Paul (85 East 7th Place).  US citizenship in not required for this position.  Deadline to apply is by 5 pm on February 13, 2017.

Eligibility

  • Demonstrated interest in epidemiology, statistics, and public health
  • MUST have completed a course in introductory statistics
  • Some experience with a statistical software package (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R, STATA, etc.)
  • Basic understanding of research methods
  • Sophomore or junior status

Preferred

  • Experience/coursework in quantitative research methods

  • The start date will be negotiated with the PI
