Circulation of Reserve Materials
All faculty, staff and students with a valid, bar-coded ID may check out Reserve material. Faculty choose the appropriate loan period of 2 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, or 7 days for each of their Reserve items.
One Reserve item may be checked out at a time; this is because of the nature of the collection (high demand and low supply). Within two hours of closing, one item may be checked out overnight, but it must be returned by opening the following morning. Replacement costs for lost books, reprints, CD’s, and DVD’s are the same as for books in general circulation.
Patrons are responsible for the timely return of all Reserve materials, whether or not they receive any reminder or overdue notices from the library. Overdue fines apply to Reserve materials at the rate of $.25 per hour. For all items on Reserve, a first notice will be sent out 24 hours after the item becomes overdue, by email in most cases. A second notice will be sent out after the next 24 hours, and the final notice 24 hours after that. Lastly, the billing notice will be sent out 24 hours after the final notice. If an overdue item generates a billing notice, and the material is returned after this time, a $5 fine will remain on the patron’s account and is not refundable. Reserve items not returned will generate a $65 charge.
Holds may not be placed on Reserve material.
Reserve items may be renewed only if there are other copies available and for the same checkout period. Reserve items may not be renewed online, by telephone or email. Materials must be present at the Reserve desk to be renewed.
Faculty and Staff Placing Material on Reserve
Acceptable Reserve materials include any Macalester book, music cd, DVD or VHS with the exception of Reference or Archives material. Faculty may put personal copies on reserve. Macalester periodicals, whether current or bound, may not be placed on Reserve. Material from other libraries may not be placed on Reserve. If Macalester does not own a book, faculty may order a new book to be put on Reserve. Material may be put on Reserve for two or more professors and/or courses. Items that are checked out may be recalled if needed for course Reserves.
Titles to be placed on Reserve should be submitted either via electronic or paper Reserves form. We process materials in the order received. Materials will be processed within three days.
