MACALESTER  2021 ONLINE REUNION

All alumni are invited to join the Macalester community online as we celebrate Reunion 2021.  Our week-long programming includes opportunities to connect, reminisce, and learn from faculty, staff, and fellow alumni; fun activities like trivia night and virtual dance parties; time to connect with your class if you’re celebrating a milestone reunion: and more!

Events will be held either on the Zoom or Remo platforms. You will receive a separate email the day prior to the event with the link to join. Note that registration is required in order to participate in any of the events listed below. Read our FAQ’s for more information about Zoom and Remo.

Wednesday, June 2

Grand Society Toast
This event will be hosted on Zoom.
Join fellow Grand Society members for a virtual happy hour in honor of your Macalester Fund leadership support hosted by Macalester’s 17th President, Dr. Suzanne Rivera.

The Grand Celebration: A Reunion Kickoff Event
This event will be hosted on Zoom.
Gather with classmates and friends as we celebrate this year’s alumni award recipients and the success of Reunion class gifts. Please join us for this all-class celebration recognizing alumni across the generations and for a message from Macalester’s 17th President, Dr. Suzanne Rivera.

0-4 Reunion (Classes of 2017-2021)
This event will be hosted on Remo.
Alumni from the classes of 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, and 2017 are invited to this casual Remo hangout hosted by yMac, the young alumni steering committee.

African-Based Movement with Sister Patricia Brown
This event will be hosted on Zoom.
Dress for comfort and join us for an uplifting and inspiring movement class with Macalester’s own Sister Patricia Brown, an active member of the Twin Cities arts community as a dancer, instructor, performer, and choreographer for the past 23 years. She is an African-based movement instructor whose fusion style is rooted in dance of West Africa and other regions, the Caribbean, and the Americas. She is a teaching artist who works with students of all ages.

James Wallace Society Celebration
This event will be hosted on Zoom.
In lieu of our annual Wallace Society Dinner, all members are invited to a virtual event to celebrate the tremendous impact your gifts will make on the Macalester community. Please join us as we welcome new Wallace members, honor those we lost this past year, and hear remarks from Macalester’s 17th President, Dr. Suzanne Rivera.

Foundational Cultural Competency Workshop with the Department of Multicultural Life (space limited)
This event will be hosted on Zoom.
To live more deeply into commitments of Multiculturalism, this foundational cultural competency session is a highly interactive workshop that enables participants to connect personal experience and social identities to better understand (in)abilities to act in resisting forms of oppression.

Participants will:

  • Connect personal experience and social identities, to better understand (in)abilities to act in resisting forms of oppression.
  • Consider how oppression operates on different levels.
  • Express ideas, identify behaviors, and actualize practices that promote action towards social justice and equity.

Join us for a fun-filled battle of wits hosted by Trivia Mafia! Compete in general knowledge and Mac-specific rounds to win prizes. Feel free to assemble your team of Mac pals (and think of an awesome team name), but please ensure that each individual on the team registers themselves. If you don’t have a team, our hosts will pair you with some new Mac pals to play with at the start of the event.

Innovating with Impact: Macalester Alumni Entrepreneur Panel
This event will be hosted on Zoom.
Join the Macalester Career Connections group from the Alumni Board for a panel highlighting alumni from Macalester’s Alumni Small Business Directory! You’ll hear from a fantastic group of entrepreneurs and business owners, as they share their stories and give insight into how they got started, what they are doing now, and their learnings along the way. Race at Macalester: Then and Now hosted by 1971
This event will be hosted on Zoom.
1971 was a pivotal time in Macalester’s history with the beginning of the Expanding Educational Opportunities (EEO) program and significant changes to the student body composition. What was actually happening on campus and how does that compare to experiences today? Join us for a conversation with alumni panelists Richard Cambridge ’70, Joyce Darden ’71, Barbara Phillips ’71, and Warren Simmons ’73, moderated by Mark Linder ’69.

Class of 1971 Social: The Lost Yearbook
This event will be hosted on Zoom.
For reasons that perhaps made sense at the time, but that have not necessarily aged well, there was never a Yearbook for the Class of 1971. However, this gives us all a great opportunity for some revisionist history. Grab your favorite adult beverage and join us for an all-class social where we’ll discuss our favorite memories from Mac, what we are just SURE the Yearbook would have predicted about our future, and how we’re all doing now.

My Mac Experience: Through the Eyes of an Athlete of Color
This event will be hosted on Zoom.
Hear 70’s Mac athletes of Color and 70’s Mac athletes tell their stories of their time at Macalester College as a Student-Athlete of Color. They will share about their ups and downs, their relationship with their Professors and coaches, the triumphs and disappointments. There were many joys and accomplishments and also social issues that affected their development as a student at Mac. Listen to the memories of relationships formed and the cultural climate of the campus and society and the activism as well as the issues surrounding those actions. We will end breaking into small groups for anyone to share their stories and memories from their time at Macalester. Hosted by the Alumni Board.

Reunion Reflections & Connections
This event will be hosted on Zoom.
The past, present, and future embrace in reunion moments. You have made the journey to the self of yesteryear; and found nourishment in community with Macalester kin. Whatever time, space and memories you have traversed; the Multifaith Chaplains invite you to a moment of ritual pause to conclude your reunion experience. Together, we will honor the swirl of memories and moments that offer meaning and purpose. Come with an open heart and open hands – and bring a candle!

The Class of 1996’s (Virtual) 25th Reunion Celebration
This event will be hosted on Remo.
You thought it wasn’t possible, but we will catch up with friends, table hop, raise a glass, and celebrate our 25th together…virtually! Technology will bring us together for a welcome from the committee with special greetings, followed by lots of time to “gather” with friends around affinities such as athletic teams, first year residence hall, major/career and Mac clubs, or just grab a table with some friends to re-connect. We can’t wait to see you!

Personal Reflections on the Impact of Racial Justice hosted by 1996
This event will be hosted on Zoom.
The murders of George Floyd and Daunte Wright amidst other instances of racial violence have shaken the Twin Cities and the world to its core. Ongoing protests and conversations have called us to take action against injustice. Join us for a moderated panel conversation with members of the Class of ’96 from the Twin Cities, US, and internationally as they share their personal reflections, followed by the opportunity to continue the dialogue in small groups.

10 Years Already?! Highlights and Insights from the Class of 2011
This event will be hosted on Remo.
Tune in for a panel of 2011 alumni in different professions. They will reflect on their learnings and accomplishments over the last 10 years, and their goals for continuing to make an impact in the future. The panel will be followed by open networking time and a chance to catch up with one another. Hosted by the Class of 2011.

This event will be hosted on Zoom.
Join the all-class dance party! We’ll start at 7:30 PM CDT with a cocktail and mocktail demonstration led by Aidan Morzenti ’16 featuring special Macalester celebrity guests:

 Afterward, Chad Kampe, Class of 2004, of Flip Phone will be spinning tunes and taking requests. Kids, partners, and pets are welcome to join in and get down for this family-friendly dance party.
