Russian is recognized by the U.S. government as a critical language, vital for national security, economic prosperity, and diplomatic engagement. It is spoken by over 200 million people across Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Russia’s eleven time zones, and by Russian-speaking emigres worldwide. Learning Russian connects you to these people and cultures while giving you a competitive edge in the global job market.
At Macalester, you can begin learning Russian from scratch — no prior experience required. Our program combines engaging coursework with a supportive atmosphere, along with immersive language experiences in the local Russian-speaking community. You’ll make steady progress, discover new ways to grow personally, and find that Russian is absolutely within your reach.
Follow us on Instagram (@russianstudiesmac) to see how Mac students learn Russian and immerse themselves in the Twin Cities community.
Macalester regularly offers Russian at the Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. Study abroad programs provide additional opportunities to develop your knowledge of Russian.
Students with prior experience in Russian should consult with Julia Chadaga ([email protected]) about language placement.
