Research Fellowships

Macalester offers several research fellowships that students can apply for to support their summer research experience. Applications open January 22nd and close March 9th, 2026

Science and Math

Jan Serie Fellowship

The Jan Serie Fellowship a student doing full time research during the summer in any area of science or math. Research may take place at Macalester or another site, but all proposals and projects require a Macalester faculty mentor/sponsor who will participate and/or advise the student during the research experience. 2–3 awards are made each year.

Any discipline, health-related

Academic Exploration Fellowship

This fellowship provides support for students applying to conduct research with faculty at Macalester or at another institution, in any academic area or discipline. There is a preference that the work intersect with the areas of biomedicine, health care, public health research or practice, global health, or community health. 1–2 awards are made each year.

Chemistry, Biochemistry

Nicholas O’Connor Fellowship

This fellowship provides support for students applying to conduct research with faculty at Macalester or at another institution with an intent to apply to graduate school in an area of chemistry or biochemistry. 1 award is made each year.

WGSS, CGH, Health Professions

Laube Fellowship for Women’s Health

This fellowship provides support for students applying to conduct research with faculty at Macalester or at another institution. Preference is given to proposals relating to community health, international development, and health disparities affecting women, underserved populations, and those in low-resource settings in or out of the United States. 1 award is made each year.

Offered through the Center for Study Away

Kay Thomas Fund

Established by Kay A. Thomas, ’63, the Thomas IGC Fund supports the Institute for Global Citizenship and may be used to strengthen and expand existing programs and explore new initiatives that align with the mission and scope of the IGC. This scholarship is currently offered in support of students who wish to pursue international academic activities during the summer, whether via study away programs, internships, language study, research, etc.
