Tanzania: Wildlife, Culture, and Connection

March 12-22, 2027
Reserve your spot by Oct. 1, 2026

Travel to Tanzania with Professor William Moseley and connections with President Suzanne M. Rivera

This is far more than a safari—it’s an opportunity to experience Tanzania through the lens of learning, discovery, and connection. Accompanied by Macalester Professor William Moseley, travelers will explore the country’s extraordinary landscapes while gaining deeper insight into its history, environment, agriculture, and culture through a series of engaging discussions delivered in the very places where these stories unfolded. Witness the spectacular wildlife of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, stand at Olduvai Gorge where the story of human origins comes alive, wander the historic streets of Zanzibar, and enjoy exclusive visits with Project Zawadi that offer an authentic look at education and community development in rural Tanzania. Designed especially for Macalester alumni, the journey also creates opportunities to reconnect with classmates and meet fellow alumni living in East Africa, making this an intellectually stimulating and deeply meaningful travel experience.

This trip is limited to 18 participants. Reserve your space by Oct. 1, 2026. Trip will be filled on a first come priority basis with a waitlist available once full.

Faculty Leader

Professor William Moseley is a human-environment and development geographer and DeWitt Wallace Professor of Geography at Macalester College. For more than two decades, he has brought his expertise in Africa, agriculture, environmental change, food security, and sustainable development into the classroom, the field, and his research. His work has taken him extensively across Sub-Saharan Africa, including Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi, and Lesotho.

Bill’s perspective is shaped not only by his academic work but also by a decade of experience in international development, including work with the Peace Corps, Save the Children, the World Bank, and USAID. He has also led Macalester study-abroad programs in South Africa, Botswana, and India, bringing a wealth of experience in helping students and travelers engage thoughtfully with the people and places they encounter.

A recipient of Macalester’s 2022 Thomas Jefferson Award, Bill is known for connecting scholarship, teaching, and real-world experience. On this journey, he will help travelers see Tanzania beyond its spectacular landscapes and wildlife, exploring the connections among environment, agriculture, history, culture, and development, bringing a distinctly Macalester spirit of curiosity and discovery to the experience.
