Archives & Rare Books Open House

Every last Tuesday of the month, Archives & Rare Books hosts an open house, inviting the Macalester community to engage with items from our collection chosen around a particular theme.

February’s Archives and Rare Books Open House will celebrate Black History Month, highlighting items from our collections that can contribute to community discussions about elevating Black voices. Archives and Special Collections often inspire more questions than answers. Our Special Collections include artists' books and works by Black artists, authors, and poets as well as novels about the Black experience written by white folks. Materials like images, yearbooks, newspapers, and records from our Archives can illustrate what it may have been like to be a Black student throughout Mac’s history. In 1915, Catharine Lealtad was Macalester’s first Black graduate, yet Mac has remained a predominantly white institution.

Come to our Open House on February 28 from 4-6pm to help us ask better questions.
