Zuoyu Tian

Dr. Tian’s research centers on computational approaches to language variation and change. His work on variation focuses particularly on social media language, while his investigations of language change span diverse ancient languages worldwide. He also pursues active research interests in computational social science and computational methods for analyzing tonal realization.

Dr. Tian holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Indiana University Bloomington, where he also earned an M.S. in Computational Linguistics. He received his M.A. in Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics from Beijing Foreign Studies University and his B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature from Beijing Language and Culture University.

His work has been published at leading venues in computational linguistics and natural language processing, including ACL (Findings), EMNLP (Findings), LREC, and Interspeech, where he has also served as a reviewer.

Beyond his core research, Dr. Tian is passionate about exploring — and helping others explore — the broad real-world applications of language technology. His collaborations extend across computer science, library and information science, Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese, psychology, and more.
