Will be oldest to play in next week’s women’s open

Martha Nause, Macalester College’s men’s and women’s golf coach, tried to make history yesterday by becoming the first woman to qualify for the Men’s U.S. Senior Open.

She held her own, finishing in the middle of the pack of about 40 senior, men golfers, with a 79. She tried to qualify because the U.S.G.A. does not have a senior women’s tournament and the men’s is not gender specific.

Nause did qualify, for the second time in three years, to play in the U.S. Women’s Open next week (July 8-11) at Oakmont Country Club outside of Pittsburgh. And once again, at age 55, she’ll be the oldest in the field as she was at Interlachen in 2008.

Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,958 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism and civic engagement.
