St. Paul, Minn. – Four Macalester College alumni have become members of the Board of Trustees. They were elected in May and will serve three-year terms.

Dr. Karen Brasel, Class of 1987
Dr. Karen Brasel is Professor of Surgery, Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery at Oregon Health and Science University. She formerly served as an assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Trauma/Critical Care at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and Medical Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Wauwatosa, Wis. She is the recipient of multiple teaching awards, including the Association of Surgical Education’s Outstanding Teacher Award in 2006. Brasel attended Macalester for its pre-med program, concert choir and Presbyterian roots. She went on to the University of Iowa for her MD and the University of Minnesota for a Master’s in Public Health.  She has participated in Front Row (now called Inside Macalester), has been a class speaker, and a member of the Campaign Steering Committee in the Step Forward campaign.  Brasel lives in Portland, Ore.

Theodore Clement, Class of 2006
Ted Clement is an Associate – Real Estate/Land Use Practice at Fried Frank, a global New York law firm.  He formerly served as a City Planning Technician in the New York City Department of City Planning. He is the son of Macalester Trustee Emeritus Steve Clement and Sally Dayton Clement, and the grandson of the late Trustee Emerita Mary Lee Dayton. Clement completed a Master’s degree in City Planning, Transportation from the University of Pennsylvania School of Design and a JD from Penn Law. He is currently a Macalester Alumni Chapter Leader and Macalester Fund Leadership donor. He has also served as a class gift agent and on his reunion planning committee. As he becomes a member of the Board of Trustees, Clement continues the tradition of having a Dayton family member on Macalester’s Board for almost the entire history of the college. He lives in New York City.

Broderick (Rick) Grubb, Class of 1973
Rick Grubb is the owner of BRK Insurance Group, LLC in New Orleans. Previously, he was Managing Director of H&G Insurance, Inc. and President of Hub International Gulf South, an international insurance company. In New Orleans, he has served as an alumni chapter leader and hosted gatherings, both formal and informal, for Mac alumni of all generations. He also supported the annual New Orleans trip for Macalester’s Bonner Scholars, a four-year civic engagement program. Grubb served in a variety of roles on the Alumni Board from 2012 to 2018, chaired the board’s diversity working group, strengthening the college’s commitment to equity and inclusion, led Reunion committees, and is currently serving the college as the volunteer leader on the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Educational Opportunity (EEO) program. Grubb received the Alumni Service Award at the 2019 Reunion, presented in recognition for his significant service and consistent loyalty to the college and as an outstanding example of volunteerism. He has worked tirelessly to engage alumni worldwide as well as collaborate deeply with campus partners to create a meaningful and engaging experience for all who participate in Reunion. Grubb lives in New Orleans.

Amy Pahl, Class of 1990
Amy Pahl is a Principal and Consulting Actuary in the Minneapolis office of Milliman, a global provider of actuarial and related products and services. She has worked at the firm since 2001 and specializes in long-term care insurance products. Prior to joining Milliman, Pahl was Assistant Vice President and Product Actuary of LifeCare Assurance Company, a long-term care reinsurer. She received a BA in math and economics from Macalester and has served as a class agent, a guest speaker in a Macalester math class, as a panelist for a “Women in STEM” alumni brunch, and is a member of the newly-formed Career Development Task Force. Pahl lives in the Twin Cities.

Other board news:
Current trustees Patty Hurley, Peter Ahn, and Michael Sneed will all serve one additional three-year term. The Board voted to eliminate the “Alumni Trustee” status, which means several other trustees are eligible for additional terms. Both Liz Hume and Aukse Jurkute will serve another three-year term and are now able to fulfill one more three-year term after that.
