Internships: Bridges to the Future

After Mac: London School of Economics

Macalester’s setting, halfway between the downtowns of St. Paul and Minneapolis, provides great access to internships. In my four years at Mac, I interned with several organizations, including the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, Grassroots Solutions, and The Advocates for Human Rights. Since graduation, I have gone on to the master’s program in human rights at the London School of Economics, and my internships were instrumental in this plan for my future.

I interned with the Community Affairs program of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. There I researched home ownership patterns on American Indian reservations in Minnesota and surrounding states. I continued working with my supervisor after the internship to co-author an article that was published in the Bank’s Community Dividend.

The following summer I interned at Grassroots Solutions, a firm in Minneapolis that provides consulting services in the areas of organizing and advocacy. I worked on climate change and sustainable food issues.

At The Advocates for Human Rights Refugee and Immigrant Program, I worked with asylum seekers and immigrants in deportation proceedings. As I learned about asylum and deportation processes, I met attorneys and advocates who work on issues that I am passionate about.
