Before 1999, Prince was already talented—but this album is where he explodes into a genre-defying force. He leans hard into synths, drum machines, and layered vocals, creating what would later be called the Minneapolis sound—a fusion of funk, new wave, R&B, and rock that reshaped ’80s pop.
If you’re new to Late Night Vinyl, here’s how it works: We listen to a vinyl record from start to finish, with a bit of pre- and post-discussion, but the main attraction is listening to really good music, on really good audio equipment across generations. Join Adan Martinez ’16 and Daymond Dean ’91 as we host late-night vinyl in honor of Prince, who passed 10 years ago.
