Sociology Major | Sociology Minor

General Distribution Requirement

All sociology courses count toward the social science distribution.

General Education Requirements

Courses that meet the general education requirements in writing, quantitative thinking, internationalism and U.S. identities and differences will be posted on the Registrar's web page in advance of registration for each semester.

Honors Program

The sociology department participates in the honors program. Eligibility requirements, application procedures and specific project expectations for the department are available on the department website. Contact the department office or Academic Programs and Advising Office with additional questions. 

Topics Courses

SOCI 194, SOCI 294, SOCI 394, SOCI 494 

Topics courses explore subjects of general interest to faculty and students that supplement the department's regular course offerings, to be announced in advance of registration. (4 credits)

Independent Study

The department offers independent study options in the form of independent projects, internships, preceptorships and Honors independent projects. For more information contact the department and review the Curriculum section of the catalog.

Sociology Major

Major Requirements

A sociology major is planned in consultation with a member of the sociology department faculty and must include at least nine courses. The five course requisites for the major are as follows:

  1. SOCI 110 - Introduction to Sociology
  2. SOCI 269 - Social Science Inquiry
  3. SOCI 272 - Social Theories
  4. SOCI 270 - Interpretive Social Research or SOCI 275 - Comparative-Historical Methods for Social Science
  5. SOCI 480 - Senior Seminar

The successful completion of these five requisites and four elective courses satisfies the requirements for the major.

Students are encouraged to complete all courses in the department, but may apply a maximum of 4 credits from study abroad programs toward fulfilling the course requirements of the major.

Students may apply a maximum of 4 credits from either a faculty supervised internship (SOCI 624) or independent project (SOCI 614) toward fulfilling the course requirements for the major.

Sociology Minor

Minor Requirements

A minor in sociology requires the successful completion of five courses in the discipline. Students must prepare and register a minor plan in consultation with a faculty member in the department.

Students are encouraged to complete all courses in the department, but may apply a maximum of 4 credits from a faculty supervised internship (SOCI 624), independent project (SOCI 614), or study abroad programs toward fulfilling the course requirements of the minor.

Sociology Department Honors Program
