Keynote Speaker: Tim Wallace ’02

Keynote Address: Newsroom Geography

Tim Wallace is the Senior Editor for Geography at The New York Times. He is part of the Graphics department and provides guidance and support on geography for desks across the newsroom.

Tim came to journalism via cartography and archaeology. He graduated from Macalester College in 2002 with degrees in Art, Classics, and Geography. He received his Master of Science in Maritime Archaeology from the University of Southampton in England. After a few years as a practicing geospatial archaeologist, he pivoted to cartographic journalism, receiving his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

About Lanegran Endowed Fund

In recognition of David A. Lanegran’s commitment to engagement with the community, the Lanegran Endowed Fund supports a range of activities that help to dissolve the wall between the classroom and the broader world for geography students.

Annually, the Geography Department hosts Lanegran Days which consists of several activities supported by the endowed fund including, visiting speakers and guest lecturers, and community engagement outings.

David Lanegran ’63 was actively engaged as a teacher-scholar at Macalester College for 46 years (1969-2015) and continues today connecting with students, alumni and the Macalester community.
