Artist Statement:
Lora Hlavsa ’13 (Geography/Studio Art) is an artist, illustrator, and designer living and working in Minneapolis, MN, USA.
As the eldest daughter of a Filipino mother and a Minnesotan father and raised between Minnesota and California, my multicultural identity and upbringing are core to the work I create, both on canvas and off. My work often explores themes of identity, pop culture, and the natural through the lens of color and pattern, creating bold compositions that feel chaotic from afar and immersive up close. Simply put, my painting and illustration work focuses on people, plants, and places. Since 2020, I have prioritized working with mission-driven organizations on visual storytelling for the common good. I am a staunch believer that art is integral to activism, and do my best to use my skills to further causes and support organizations that I care about.
Lora is also a Visual Communications Designer at University of Minnesota Institute on the Environment.
