The US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs named Macalester College a Top Producing Institution of Fulbright US Students in 2023-2024. This recognition is given to United States colleges and universities that received the highest number of Fulbright awardees.

“Macalester’s long streak of being named a top producer of students for the Fulbright US Student program is a source of great pride,” said President Suzanne Rivera. “What has become an annual tradition of being recognized in this way speaks to the consistently high caliber of students we attract to Macalester and their desire to go out into the world and try to make it better.”

Founded in 1946, the Fulbright program is the US government’s prestigious international educational exchange program. The broad ambition for the program is to encourage peaceful relations and increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries. Since its inception, Fulbright has supported over 400,000 talented individuals who returned home with an expanded worldview, new lived experiences to draw upon, and broader professional networks. The program currently operates in over 160 countries across the globe.

The Fulbright Program is funded by an annual appropriation made by the US Congress to the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It also receives additional support from foreign partner governments, non-governmental organizations, private organizations, host institutions, corporate partnerships, and individual donors. At Macalester, the program is organized through the Foundation, Government, and Corporate Relations office

Outside the United States, the program is managed in forty-nine countries through independent Fulbright Commissions, which were established through a framework of legislation and binational agreements with the goal of creating conditions to build mutual understanding and avert future war.
