A Story about the Population of Belgium, and Another Story about Spiky Functions
Will Mitchell (Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science)

Will Mitchell will share two stories, starting with one about Pierre Verhulst’s logistic model, an attempt to refine Malthus’s famous observation that biological populations can grow exponentially. Modern references to Verhulst’s work often describe – a bit too glowingly – his 1844 prediction of Belgium’s current population, while ignoring his comments about slavery in the United States. Will will ask for the audience’s suggestions on which parts of this fuller picture he should share with students, and how. The second story concerns the mathematical problem of finding the area under a curve that has a tall, narrow spike; this extends some work carried out by Will’s summer research students in 2020.

Building a Supportive Environment for Community-Engaged Scholarship

This session, facilitated by a group of colleagues who have been thinking together about community-engaged scholarship (CES) for several years, will highlight the ethos, practices, and impacts of CES at Macalester. We will explore several examples of CES across disciplines, emphasizing how methodologies of engagement contribute to the expansion of our intellectual community for faculty, staff, students, and the broader community. We will also discuss the recommendations of the CES working group for changes to the faculty handbook that can make Macalester more conducive to these forms of scholarship.

A Chat about Small Talk
Beth Severy-Hoven (Classical Mediterranean and Middle East)

Professor Severy-Hoven will never forget one of her first in-person classes in the spring of 2021 – only half of the students were there, sitting 6 feet apart, all masked up. Some had not been in a classroom with other people for almost a year. When the class took their regular mid-class break, the students had no idea what to do. They looked around. They laughed nervously. They took out their phones. What is small talk and why do humans do it? How can we help students with no small talk experience? Beth will report briefly on the science of small talk and play excerpts from the podcast that inspired this presentation (The Science of Happiness, Episode 82: How to Talk with Strangers). Then she’ll share – and solicit – ideas on how to get students with no skills to practice this simple, human activity linked to anxiety levels and a sense of belonging.

New Public Impact Fellowship Program for Faculty: An Information Session

Engaging with the media as an expert can provide considerable benefits to a faculty member’s career, not to mention help the public better understand complex issues that matter. But writing commentaries and becoming a go-to expert source can be challenging, especially when time and funds are limited. That’s why Macalester is creating the new Public Impact Fellowship program. The new program will consist of a cohort of faculty from a wide range of disciplines and career stages who are committed to elevating their scholarship and expertise through media engagement for one semester or academic year. Participating faculty will receive a stipend and a custom media engagement plan tailored to fit with professional goals. Please join Joe Linstroth, Macalester’s media relations director, to learn more, ask questions, and help shape the program from the beginning.

Crowd Cohesion and Protest Outcomes
Lisa Mueller, Political Science

Amidst an unprecedented swell in global protest, scholars and activists wrestle with the question of why protests succeed or fail. Lisa Mueller explores a new answer: more cohesive crowds, where protesters agree on their demands, are more likely to win concessions than less cohesive crowds. Drawing on psychology and linguistics, Mueller theorizes that cohesive demands are more comprehensible and thus persuasive. She tests this theory with a multi-method approach. First, she uses cross-national data from 97 protests in Europe and the Americas to estimate the relationship between crowd cohesion and subsequent concessions, applying natural language processing to measure cohesion in participants’ self-reported motivations. Second, a survey experiment in South Africa tests the causal effects of crowd cohesion and assesses comprehensibility of demands as the mechanism driving concessions. Third, qualitative case studies of two British protests demonstrate the theory in real-world settings. Mueller’s findings suggest that activists can improve their odds of success by coordinating around a common goal.

A decent number of researchers and educators have questioned the validity of current grading practices in academia. Sharing some of their concerns, Ahoo Najafian (Religious Studies) and Amy Damon (Economics) began to experiment with alternatives and implemented some practices in their classes. In this session, they will discuss why they turned to alternatives to grading, what they learned from the experience, what worked, and what they are going to change.

Adversity and Acceptance in STEM: A Chemistry Project

Starting in the Spring of 2022, the Chemistry Department began the implementation of a project inspired by the social belonging intervention – developed by Greg Walton at Stanford – in our general chemistry classes. Green and Rodwogin will give an overview of Walton’s research and present their version of his intervention that they developed for their general chemistry classes.

Dilemma Mondays: A series of conversations about pedagogical challenges

Are you struggling with student engagement as we transition into a post(?!)-COVID era? Have you continued with a flexible deadline policy for all of your students but are finding it’s not quite working? Are you challenged about course content decisions as you work to make your curriculum more liberatory and representative of a range of cultures, experiences, perspectives, etc.? Do you find yourself at a loss when students have conflicts with one another in your classes? If your answer to any (or all!) of these questions is “yes,” or if you have other pedagogical dilemmas you’d like to discuss with colleagues, please join us for “Dilemma Mondays” on January 30, February 6, April 17, and April 24.

Have you started to think about how it might inform or affect your teaching? Please join us for a conversation about the problems and possibilities raised by ChatGPT. Colleagues from a number of departments around campus will share their perspectives and experiences, and there will be plenty of time for open discussion.

A Shared Sense of Place:  Working Together at Ordway to Expand Collaborative, Cross-Disciplinary, Outdoor Experiential Education

We will present our experiences and outcomes of an ACM FACE grant supported collaboration between Macalester and St. Olaf faculty and staff entitled “Exploring collaborative, cross-disciplinary, outdoor experiential education and a sense of place using examples from ACM field stations and natural lands”.  Our goal is to develop interdisciplinary outdoor experiential learning opportunities for our students and ourselves primarily utilizing Macalester’s Ordway Field Station and St. Olaf’s Natural Lands.  Come and share your ideas and join the conversation as we continue our work to expand teaching, learning and scholarly work at Macalester’s “other campus.”  A selection of books purchased through the grant will be available.

As the first Posse Mentor, I have stepped into a new role that is world’s apart from anything I have done before. In this talk, I’ll share some of the lessons I’ve gleaned so far.

Drawing from his recent publication, “My Emancipation Don’t Fit Your Equation”: Critical Enactments of Black Education in the U.S., Lozenski will explore how the practices of fugitivity, abolition, and accommodation have framed the education of African American communities. The discussion will cover a wide historical range from pre-colonial West African education to contemporary educational politics in Minnesota.

A cohort of faculty participating in the AAC&U Institute on Open Educational Resources will share key take-aways from their participation in the institute and motivations for conducting this environmental scan.

Building Campus-Community Solidarities: Reflections from Project Pericles Fellows
Myrl Beam (Women and Gender Studies) and Roopali Phadke (Environmental  Studies)

In this talk, Myrl Beam and Roopali Phadke reflect on their work as Project Pericles fellows.  They will discuss the complicated work of building campus-community solidarities and grappling with what it means to be in right relationship with community. Specifically, Beam describes the work of mapping the landscape of abolitionist organizing in the Twin Cities alongside students in his Abolition Feminism: Race, Gender, Sexuality and Critical Prison Studies course. In Phadke’s Energy Justice course, students are collaborating with the Citizens Utility Board to understand how utilities can better address energy poverty and unequal energy burdens for Minnesota households. Their projects illustrate both the opportunities and the challenges of community-engaged teaching and learning.

Our Fantastic Voyage: Some Highlights of A Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration on Vaccination Intent

How did a phone call about IRB procedures lead to a collaboration between a chemist and a sociologist? What happens when colleagues across campus start asking each other questions outside of their usual fields? In early 2021, as the first COVID-19 vaccines became available, we teamed up on a research project studying how watching an educational video affected viewers’ intention to get vaccinated. In this Serie center presentation, we’ll talk about the twists and turns in the study from design, to analysis, to publishing. Of course, we’ll share some of our findings, but also want to discuss what the cross-disciplinary collaboration process itself was like, our experience publishing our results, and how we’ve since incorporated the study into our teaching.

Non-visual Visualizations: Making Accessible Data Visualizations in R
Lauren Milne (Math, Statistics, & Computer Science)

At the beginning of the pandemic, data visualizations such as the CDC’s “Flatten the Curve” graphic and the COVID dashboards on government and media websites became increasingly important tools for people to understand the pandemic and make informed choices about their safety. However, those (and most other data visualizations) are completely inaccessible for someone who is blind. In this talk, I will cover how to make accessible data visualizations, from alt text to sonification, using the Highcharter package in the R programming language. I will present the (freely available) module I created for my Introduction to Data Science class on creating accessible visualizations in R and talk about other efforts to bring accessibility into my curriculum. This event is part of Macalester’s Radical MacACCESS programming.

Decolonizing the Curriculum in a French Course on “Francophony in/of America”

During Spring 2022, we paired a Macalester College French course on the Francophone heritages in North America and the Caribbean with an advanced French class on the same topic at Saint Paul Academy and Summit School. The course, which received a small grant from the Pericles Foundation, confronted official French narratives with traditionally silenced or marginalized accounts. It integrated local history as well as the history of Francophone/French heritage in Quebec, the Midwest, Haiti and its diaspora, Louisiana, and history and resources about the Metis, Innu, Native American and First Nations. The course provided opportunities to meet with and learn from community leaders from a variety of backgrounds.

We would like to share both the highlights and the challenges of the course as well as the units produced by student groups focusing on decolonial knowledge, anchored in intersectional perspectives that will be made accessible to the public.
