What does Macalester look for when evaluating candidates for admission?
Many factors (recommendations, essays, interviews, leadership potential and abilities, and extracurricular activities) are considered in our evaluation of each applicant's admission credentials.
What high school courses does Macalester expect admission candidates to have
Macalester recommends a secondary school curriculum with four years of English, three years of history or social science, three years of mathematics, three years of laboratory science, and two years of a single foreign language. In addition, applicants are expected to have taken at least some of the honors or advanced courses available at their secondary schools.
What is Macalester's policy regarding college credit hours earned while in high
For students admitted to Macalester through the first-year admissions program, Macalester will accept for credit no more than the equivalent of twenty Macalester credit hours from courses earned at a college or university prior to matriculation at Macalester. Summer session college credits, Minnesota Post-Secondary Education Options Program credits, International Baccalaureate credits, and Advanced Placement Program credits are included under this limitation.
For more information refer to the college catalog or call the Registrar's Office at (651) 696-6200.
How selective is Macalester?
41% of applicants were admitted for the fall of 2017. The middle 50% of students admitted:
--scored 29-32 on the ACT
--scored 650-690 on SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and 640-740 on SAT Math
Macalester also looks carefully at non-academic involvement and achievements.
What standardized tests should I take?
Students may submit scores from the ACT or either version of the SAT (current test or the "redesigned" one to be offered beginning in Spring 2016) to meet this requirement. These options are equally acceptable. Identification codes: SAT (6390) and ACT (2122)
Results from SAT II subject tests are not required, but will be considered if submitted. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required of international applicants, unless English is the first language or primary language of instruction.
All applicants must submit test scores from either the SAT or ACT in order to complete their application. Applications will not be reviewed without test scores. Your test scores may be included on your school transcript. If so, there is no need to request them from the testing service.
