Indigenous Peoples' Day: Renaming the Humanities Building with Jennings Mergenthal '21

On November 18th, 2019 Macalester Board of Trustees voted to remove the name of Macalester founder, Edward Duffield Neill, from the Humanities building which was formerly known as Neill Hall. This action was the result of a student campaign that brought attention to Edward Neill’s racist and dehumanizing language and attitudes expressed toward indigenous people in his writings.

Join us this Indigenous People’s day (Oct. 11, 2021) to learn more about the student organizing efforts that brought about this change. Our presenter, Jennings Mergenthal ‘21 was involved in the 2019 renaming of the Humanities building and unearthing the history of Macalester. Jennings currently works for the Science Museum of Minnesota.
