Web Training and Resources

Macalester.edu uses WordPress as its primary web content management system (CMS) to manage over 16,000 webpages across over 100 sites. The website includes both centrally maintained content (managed by Communications and Marketing) and content maintained by individual departments and offices.

WordPress Classic vs. Gutenberg

In 2018, the open-source WordPress project released their Gutenberg block editor as a replacement for their classic editor. Macalester started using the Gutenberg block editor in 2020 for some sites, with the goal of eventually converting all macalester.edu sites to Gutenberg. We launched a new visual design simultaneously with the Gutenberg editor. Sites in the new visual design can only be built and maintained using Gutenberg.

WordPress Training

For many years, Information Technology Services (ITS) was responsible for training the Macalester community in the WordPress classic editor. ITS still offers a training guide (a Macalester-only Google Doc) on the WordPress classic editor.

With the switch to Gutenberg, Communications and Marketing provides WordPress training materials.
