Starting January 1, 2026, the Minnesota Paid Leave program will be available for employees working in Minnesota. The program will provide eligible workers with job protection and partial wage replacement for specific medical and family reasons, including personal health concerns, caring for a family member, bonding with a new child, and addressing safety-related concerns.
There are two main types of leave:
- Medical Leave when your own serious health condition prevents you from working.
- Family Leave when you are caring for a family member; bonding with a new child; responding to safety concerns such as domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking; and addressing certain needs arising from a family member’s military service.
Employees will be eligible for Minnesota Paid leave; however, it’s important to note that the qualifying event must last at least 7 days to be eligible for Minnesota Paid Leave payments.
In a single benefit year, you may take up to 12 weeks of Medical Leave for your own serious health condition and up to 12 weeks of Family Leave to care for a loved one, bond with a new child, your own safety, or for certain military-related needs. If you qualify for both types of leave, you can use a combined total of up to 20 weeks in one benefit year. A benefit year begins on the first day the leave starts. Minnesota Paid Leave runs concurrently with Family Medical Leave (FML) and Minnesota Parenting Leave (MPL).
