Maryne Mossey
Viola da Gamba
Praised by the Minneapolis Star Tribune as “nimbly expressive” and possessing
“warmth and sensitivity,” cellist and violist da gamba, Maryne Mossey, is an active
performer and teacher based in the Twin Cities. On Baroque cello and viola da
gamba, Maryne is an avid continuo player with Early Music ensembles such as La
Grande Bande, Consortium Carissimi, Lyra Baroque Orchestra, and the Bach
Society of Minnesota.
Dedicated to fostering the next generation of cellists and gamba players, Maryne
has a large studio of students out of her home and at the Saint Paul Conservatory
of Music. In addition to teaching privately, Maryne coaches weekly viol consort
classes and the Baroque ensemble at SPCM. Maryne has taught classes at the
Viola da Gamba Society of America’s annual Conclave, a week-long workshop for
gamba players from around the world. And she was a 2025-26 Minnesota Public
Radio Class Notes Artist, bringing Early Music performances and presentations to
K-12 students throughout Greater Minnesota.
Maryne studied with Clive Greensmith and Marcy Rosen on modern cello. Her
studies in Early Music have been with Julie Elhard and Sarah Cunningham on viola
da gamba, and Phoebe Carrai on Baroque cello. Maryne holds a Bachelor of Music
degree from Queens College and a Masters in Nursing from the University of
Minnesota.
When Maryne is not playing cello or gamba, she can be found tending to her
garden and her two Italian greyhounds in the Longfellow neighborhood of
Minneapolis.
