Update Regarding ICE Activity

Dear Campus Community,

We recently learned that federal agents detained a student at Augsburg University at a parking lot on their campus. We understand that videos of the incident are circulating and news media outlets are reporting on the incident. We know that Augsburg’s leadership is providing assistance to the student and their family, and we have offered our support as well.

The detainment of this student follows increasingly hateful and unacceptable rhetoric aimed at immigrants and communities of color in our state.  We recognize the distress caused by actions that target immigrants and others, and we remain committed to supporting the safety and wellbeing of every member of our campus community. This website (Macalester login required) offers resources and information for students, staff, and faculty. We recently distributed “Know Your Rights” ‘zines and cards around campus. Public Safety continually monitors activity on or near campus, and we have asked them to increase their patrols.

As a community, we can support each other. Travel in small groups, and do not allow entrance to people without Mac ID to restricted access areas (aka piggybacking). All students, faculty, and staff may call Public Safety at 651-696-6555 to request a safety escort on campus, and students may request an escort to their on or off-campus residences. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Students navigating immigration processes can reach out to the Dean of Students Office, International Student Programs, and the Lealtad-Suzuki Center for Social Justice; and faculty and staff should contact Human Resources.

Off-campus resources are also available. Monarca is a Minneapolis-based community organization that offers training and resources, and the American Civil Liberties Union provides helpful legal guidance.

If you want to talk with someone about any concerns, please contact any of these offices:

We know the end of the semester is a stressful time. We understand this message may increase concern; nevertheless, we felt it necessary to ensure all members of our community are aware of the current circumstances and have access to timely information. Please do not hesitate to reach out for help if you have any questions or concerns.

In solidarity,

Dr. Suzanne M. Rivera
President
