Closing 2027 Move-out (or Closing) happens in two “waves.”
Wave One– Closing officially starts on May 9th, 2027 at Noon. Students who are not: graduating seniors, participating in commencement or a part of our Residential Life team will need to depart prior to Noon on May 16, 2027. Residents staying between May 9th and Summer housing should fill out the the Summer Housing Form when it goes live.
Wave Two– Students participating in commencement (including graduating seniors) who are not staying for Transitional Housing or Summer Housing may not stay past Noon on May 16th. Graduating Seniors may not request Transitional Housing or Summer Housing.
All students staying on-campus post Noon on May 16th can stay in their current room until Summer Housing Move. All students (Transitional Housing and Summer Housing) must move to Summer Housing (Dupre) . No exceptions.
More details about Summer 2027 housing options will be live during Spring 2027. You can find more information on your housing portal during this time!
Spring 2027 Move-Out Blueprint E-bulletin board will be live on your housing portal during Spring 2027 semester. All closing information can also be found on a student’s housing portal, hall bulletin boards, and through RA closing meetings.

Winter Break 2026-2027 To sign up for Winter Break 2026-2027, the form will be live during the Fall 2026 academic year. Please look for more information on your housing portal.Fall Closing – Noon on December 20, 2026. All residents not registered for winter break housing must depart.Winter Break (including JTerm) – December 20, 2026 – January 22, 2027Residence Halls and Apartments will be closed for Winter Break (and J-Term) at 12:00pm on Sunday, December 20, 2026. Halls and apartments will re-open at 9:00am on Saturday, January 23, 2027.Students can register to stay on campus during Winter Break / J-Term for certain pre-approved reasons: being an international student, a student who is a domestic student who has nowhere else to go, or a student participating in a campus sponsored program. See instructions below.
To be eligible for Winter Break / J-Term housing, students must have a housing contract for Fall 2026 or Spring 2027.The deadline to register for Winter Break and J-Term Housing will be sent around late October 2026.Students participating in January Term (J-Term) can start returning back to campus on January 4, 2026 at 9:00 AM.Special requests for the following are not allowed: Getting over jetlag, non-Macalester related events, transportation arrangements or prices, and error in scheduling. While this is not an exhaustive list, Residential Life reserves the right to deny requests.College Services including Café Mac and Hamre Center Closed – December 24, 2026 – January 3, 2027.Each student staying on campus during this time will have access to a kitchen in their residence hall, and the Open Pantry will offer food resources to those who need them. Additionally, all students have 24/7/365 access to the Press 2 counseling* and Press 3 access nurse** support, whether they stay on campus, go home, or use the winter break to travel somewhere different.**These dates are estimated based on the yearly cycle of Macalester and may be tweaked once campus announces the days the college is closed. Services are extremely limited on campus during this time. Any students who live on campus will need to organize their own meals and can expect Press 2, Public Safety, and some Open Pantry hours to be the limited resources available. -
Safety Reminders for Breaks If you need emergency assistance, please call Public Safety at 651-696-6555. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. RA staff will continue to be on duty from 7 pm-8 am Monday through Friday evenings and 24 hours on the weekend. Please save your halls RA On-Call number in your phone.
Addtionally:
- Do not let those you do not know into the residence halls
- Report any safety or facilities concerns to Public Safety at 651-696-6555
- Do not prop exterior doors
- Courtesy & quiet hours are still active during breaks
- If you choose to leave, please leave your room in a safe and secure manner
- Lock your door
- Close all windows (both interior & exterior)
- Turn off your lights
- Take out your garbage & recycling
