Visiting Artist

J-Sun is a long-term practitioner of several street dance forms that he teaches, choreographs, and performs. He received the 2017 Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board and is the artistic director of the Mixtape series at the Cowles Center. J-Sun is a Ph.D. student in the Theater Arts and Dance Department at the University of Minnesota, as well as disciplinary head of the Urban and Street Dance track. His first book, Music, Moves, and Mind-Sets: Theorizing Hip Hop History and Pedagogy Through Breaking, released a second edition in 2019. He has co-authored a second book, The Future of Music: Towards A Computational Musical Theory of Everything, which will be published by Springer in April 2020. His current choreographic work is influenced by his academic focus on agency, vulnerability, and resistance through a mover’s lens.
