On-Campus Resources

Feminists in Action (FIA) / Students Together Against Rape and Sexual Assault (STARSA)

Adviser: Karla Benson Rutten, Multicultural Life
FIA’s mission is to promote awareness of gender equity as a human rather than woman issue and stop the process of women’s issues from slipping through the cracks. We also seek to redefine the feminist movement for a contemporary society. STARSA’s goals include increasing campus awareness of rape and sexual assault in the community and at Macalester, promoting action against sexual violence, and providing resources and support for students at Macalester. This organization also provides a forum for discussion on issues concerning sexual violence.

Mac Activists for Choice

Mac Activists for Choice educates the Macalester community about pro-choice issues and carries out the mission of the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League. This mission includes the guarantee that every woman has “the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion”.

Queer Union (QU)

Adviser(s): Finn Schneider, Residential Life and Corie Hammers, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
QU dedicates itself to the creation of safe spaces for queers and friends through a commitment to education, community building, personal support, and social change both on campus and in the broader community. QU welcomes all students, irrespective of identity.

Women in Economics (WIE)

WIE exists to create an arena for discussion on issues and challenges facing women majoring in economics. We provide support and guidance for female Macalester economics majors.

Women in Science and Math (WISM)

Adviser: Kristi Curry Rogers, Biology
WISM organizes activities for women in and interested in the sciences and math. Our goal is to provide a variety of informative, supportive, and fun activities that allow women to explore these areas of interest such as information for graduate school and careers, youth outreach, field trips, film viewings and discussions.

The Allies Project
Created in 2003, the Allies Project at Macalester College consists of a group of faculty, administrators, and students who are committed to creating a safe environment and community for all people regardless of sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, religion, class, age, or ability. Macalester’s community members have multifaceted personal identities and on an individual and group level, these multiple identities can be celebrated or denied, affirmed or oppressed, and be the source of strength, pride, and/or struggle. Allies of the Allies Project provide support and resources to individuals and/or groups who are exploring their own feelings and/or are struggling with issues related to their multiple identities.

Gender & Sexuality Commons
The Gender & Sexuality Commons (GSC) is an independently run, student-powered, exploratory space initiated by student organizations and supported by the Department of Multicultural Life and Campus Programs.

Out & Proud Faculty & Staff
The Out and Proud community is a voluntary list of Macalester faculty and staff members who self-identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and/or Asexual. This virtual space helps to increase the visibility of this community on campus, as well as to provide a network of support for faculty, staff, and students.
