MentorUP

About MentorUp

  • What is MentorUP

MentorUP is a program for students with disabilities at Macalester College, specifically for first and second year students with disabilities who would like to connect with an experienced student who also identifies as disabled.   Mentoring provides a reciprocal relationship where mentors and mentees collaborate on ways to explore personal, academic, career and leadership goals with the support of campus resources.   Mentees receive communication and/or meet on a regular basis with mentors; both are invited to programs and activities with a goal of increased inclusion of college students with disabilities.  MentorUP also focuses on career connections outside of Macalester to continue the thread of inclusivity and support in professional settings.

  • What does MentorUp do?

MentorUP is beneficial for mentors/mentees in multiple ways.  It can provide support and guidance in an open and welcoming environment.   Assist students in acclimating to and navigating the college environment.  Maybe most important MentorUp instill’s a sense of belonging and community with others who identify as disabled.  This is done by connecting with a mentor/mentee once a week and social gatherings suggested by Center for Disability Resources or outside of Macalester.

  • MentorUP History

MentorUP started in 2019 during a pandemic.  It was an opportunity for current students with disabilities to help support incoming or current students with disabilities who may need additional support  and connections virtually or in-person.  In 2020, Macalester Center for Disability Resources was awarded a grant funded by the Mansergh-Stuessy Fund for College Innovation of the Saint Paul Foundation specifically focused on mentoring for students with disabilities at Mac.
