Chun Chen

Chun Chen (she/her) is a Visiting Instructor in the History Department at Macalester College.
She is a Ph.D. candidate in History at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, specializing in
premodern Chinese gender history and the history of children and childhood. Her doctoral
dissertation, “Where the Girls Belong: Girls and Girlhood in Song China (960–1279),” examines
girlhood as a critical social category in Song society and situates premodern Chinese childhood
within global historical scholarship.

Chun holds a research-based M.A. in Chinese Studies from the National University of Singapore
and a B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature from Lanzhou University. Her research has been
recognized and supported by a series of competitive honors, including China’s National
Scholarship, the University of Minnesota’s Sara Evans Fellowship, Union Pacific Research
Fellowship, and Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. She also serves on the Board of Directors of
the Society for Song, Yuan, and Conquest Dynasties Studies.
