Ethan Besser Fredrick is teaching at Macalester Spring 2023 and is currently finishing his PhD in History at the University of  Minnesota.  From central Iowa, Ethan graduated with a BA in History and Economics from Simpson College. He is thrilled to be back at a liberal arts institution.
His research interests include the history of peasants, popular religion and political movements, and the intersection of violence, media, and fascism. His dissertation studies the connections between Catholic extremists in Mexico and Spain in the early 20th century. Specifically, he examines evolving notions of martyrdom as a young generation of Catholics pushed the limits of political resistance and revolt in the Interwar period.
