James Coplin (he/him) is currently finishing his PhD work at the University of Minnesota. He has roots to Macalester graduating with computer science and history majors in 1999. Prior to joining Macalester, James taught at the University of Minnesota, St. Olaf, Hamline, and St. Thomas.

James’ research is focused on the urban history and lived experiences of the foreign community of Westerners in Canton, China (modern day Guangzhou) in the nineteenth century on the eve of the Opium War. His interests and research focus on environment, immigrants, empire, information networks, and material culture.
