Helpful Information for Fall 2020

Auditions and Lesson Signup

There have been questions about auditions and lesson signups.  Audition info is posted elsewhere on the site; note that the main change is that the process will move online.  Please consult the information here and/or the ensemble director for procedural questions.  Lesson signups will be managed by department coordinator Kate Roarty, and registration is available through September 13 via online registration form. For new students, please note that your ensemble director will register you for ensembles after auditions (you don’t register directly).

Music Building use during the Quiet Period

During the quiet period (until September 16), all academic buildings on campus will remain locked and inaccessible to students, including the Music Building.  This decision was made by the President and senior staff, and special accommodation can’t be granted.  During this time, all music facilities, including lockers and practice rooms, will be unavailable.

Instrument access during the Quiet Period

For those students who are on campus or St. Paul-based, and use/borrow school instruments for the year, we will have a system in place for you to pick up your instrument at one of the doors to the Music Building at a particular date and time.  Details TBA.  Please note you would need to store the instrument in your living quarters until the building reopens after the Quiet Period.

Music Building access after the Quiet Period

After the quiet period, the building will reopen, and lockers, practice rooms, etc., can be accessed again.

Lesson space

A block of practice rooms has been designated as “lesson rooms” for students who need them.  These will be reservable through the department office. Ethernet cables and dongles are provided; bring your laptop and use ethernet to improve connectivity issues. Please note these won’t be available until after the Quiet Period.

Concerts

For the Fall semester at least, ensemble directors and coaches may plan concert activities, but all performances will be without a live audience, and recorded and livestreamed instead.

Declaring the major or minor

Please email the chair, Randy Bauer, for a Zoom appointment.  All declarations need to include a meeting before approval is granted.

Faculty office hours & Department office (“Fishbowl”) hours

Please see separate links for current information about contacts and hours.  For Module 1 at least, all contact will be online.
