My summer project at World Without Genocide consisted of updating and creating toolkits for action for a range of genocide and justice issues. During the 10 weeks, I developed toolkits on the Uyghur genocide, the Rohingya genocide, as well as the wars in Ethiopia and Ukraine. Crafting each toolkit involves a good deal of reading and researching about the topic and building action steps accordingly. This project helped me carry out meaningful work given my values to build and preserve peace for everyone, as well as my aspirations to advocate for those whose voices are lost in the cacophony of our world. The most exciting part was adapting the toolkits into Instagram material to increase their reach.
At World Without Genocide, I was challenged to think outside the box for genocides and conflicts always show warning signs. I educated myself and others through reports about human rights in Senegal for example and the treatment of non-Ukrainian refugees during the Russian invasion.
Ultimately, I learned a lot about advocacy by nonprofits, impunity and justice, common images (they deserve a highlight in this story), and definitely became a better writer. I wrap up the experience with impactful personal and professional growth, as well as certainty that I would happily do it again.
